Prof. Bishop Adam Lepa strove to get the truth in words through his lectures, homilies, articles and books. He warned against manipulation, but also against propaganda in the media – RadioMaryja.pl

Prof. Bishop Adam Lepa was with us. I am convinced that now he will also intercede in our affairs before God. (…) He fought for the truth with words through his lectures, his homilies, his articles and his books. He tried to show the mechanisms of operation of the media, he warned that they often become a tool in the pursuit of the interests of political, economic, ideological and unjust social groups. He warned against manipulation, but also against propaganda in the media. He paid attention to techniques and systems of manipulation. He presented a clear and lucid analysis of it in his books, he showed how serious the situation is – said in an interview with Nasz Dziennik, Dr. Tadeusz Rydzyk CSsR, director of Radio Maryja.

Prof. Bishop Adam Lepa, who passed away on April 27 this year. at the age of 83 he was a great friend of Radio Maryja and Telewizja Trwam and all the works created by them.

– I met the P. pb. Adam Lepa at the time of the creation of Radio Maryja. He offered advice, encouragement. He was a great pedagogue, he inspired confidence, he blew the spark of good work for him to grow. We were aware that to create Radio Maryja, we needed people with Catholic training, but also knowledgeable about the media. I shared my thoughts on creating a journalistic study with the P. pb. Adam Lepa. What do you think of that? – I asked. And he blessed with great joy and said: let this be a gift from Radio Maryja for the Church in Poland.

And we did.

– We started to create a journalistic study just after the announcement of the creation of Radio Maryja. We recruited, more than 190 people applied! Some of them are still working with us and creating great things. Then the Institute of Journalism was established. St. Maksymilian Maria Kolbe with an annual cycle of education. It became the foundation for the establishment of the College of Social and Media Culture in Toruń, which is now an academy. He appreciated it very much, took part in colloquiums and conferences. He supported Radio Maryja and Television Trwam. I remember that when he learned about the creation of “Nasz Dziennik”, he accepted this information with great hope, he also wanted to start a Catholic daily.

He was one of those bishops who cared a lot about Catholic media in Poland. We have also collaborated with Fr. infulat Ireneusz Skubiś, for many years editor-in-chief of ‘Niedziela’.

Bishop Adam always offered advice?

– I asked the P. pb. Adam Lepa on various issues, he was the best media specialist in the Catholic Church in Poland, but also in Europe, among clergy and laity. In 1992, when the threat of liquidation hung over Radio Maryja, I was asked to report to the Ministry of Communications. The conversation with the Deputy Minister was very lively. I said: The radio is not mine, it is made of people, so I will inform the listeners of this conversation. The deputy got even angrier and said, Father is starting a war. And he threatened: We have the media.

To this day, we can see how the left-liberal media talk badly about Radio Maryja and all the works created by it. Every year, three thousand negative statements and articles are published in various media about Radio Maryja. All this false information should be found in the trial, but where to find justice… We know that God will judge him one day. I said to the Deputy Minister: I am not starting the war, remember that during the war there are victims on both sides, we do not know who will be the winner, but I will not give up.

And what happened?

– I came to Toruń thinking what to do. The light has come: Radio Mary is Mary, we must go to the Mother. I called the guardian father of the monastery of Jasna Góra with a request for the possibility of celebrating the Holy Mass for this intention. I called the P. pb. Adam Lepa, will he come as President of the Polish Episcopal Commission for Social Communications. He accepted immediately. The common prayer to the Mother of God brought together several thousand people.

Bishop Adam Lepa was with us. I am convinced that now he will also intercede in our affairs before God.

Father Director, how did Fr. Bishop Adam Lepa fight for the truth?

– He fought for the truth with words through his lectures, homilies, articles and books. He tried to show the mechanisms of operation of the media, he warned that they often become a tool in the pursuit of the interests of political, economic, ideological and unjust social groups.

He warned against manipulation, but also against propaganda in the media. He paid attention to techniques and systems of manipulation. He presented a clear and lucid analysis in his books, he showed the seriousness of the situation.

He strongly emphasized that media is a technique, but media is also people. When the systemic transformations in Poland started and there was a chance for the emergence of independent Catholic media, the bishop was very keen on this, he knew that the Church had to develop the media space. At the same time, he strongly emphasized the importance of educating media people.

Without well-trained journalists, it is difficult to find decent media.

– He welcomed the establishment of Catholic journalism studies. He wrote, among other things, post of “Mass Media Pedagogy”, he wanted to educate people to create media, but also to receive it. He taught that the media should be created by competent people, and at the same time witnesses to the truth. He warned that the media, in the hands of competent people only, without focusing on the truth, becomes a tool of manipulation and propaganda and does not serve the common good. He showed that the media should be in the good hands of people shaped by the truth.

He indicated that the truth is always sought at its source. Bishop Adam Lepa kept the truth. The energy of young people with a Catholic background, the experience of the elders, is the power of the Church. The mission of shaping society in this way is fulfilled by the media in the service of truth.

The media can be compared to nuclear energy, as Father often reminds us. Why?

– The atom itself is good, it can be used for the good of mankind. However, an atom in the hands of evil people is very dangerous, it can cause destruction. The media too. Created by people who serve truth with love, they serve good. And created by people who don’t care about the truth, they kill. You have to understand it, see it. It is also a message for today that the late Prof. Msgr. Adam Lepa.

Thanks for the conversation.
