D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 M15 mesh system – review

Rating scale 1-6 (6-targeting)

We start

Mesh systems D-Link EAGLE PRO AI can be purchased in two versions – consisting of two base stations M15-2 and from three base stations M15-3. The version has reached us for testing M15-2 consisting of two devices and, according to the manufacturer, sufficient to cover an apartment or a house with an area of up to 370 m with the signal2. What this product is supposed to set apart from the competition are the reports and recommendations sent by the AI to the user so that they can enjoy the best performance of the home network. The price is also attractive – 559 PLN for a mesh set supporting WiFi 6 is a competitive proposition. We checked the transfers and we can compare them with the previous mesh systems that we have already reviewed.

The main advantages and disadvantages of D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 M15

Benefits of the D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 M15:

  • Supports Wi-Fi 6
  • Inexpensive for WiFi 6 standard – 559 PLN for 2 devices M15
  • Aesthetic construction, small housing
  • Works well for increasing WiFi coverage
  • The possibility of configuration both in the mobile application and in the browser – in the second option, without creating an account
  • You don’t have to pay extra for features

Cons of D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 M15:

  • The first launch is not completely hassle-free – you have to manually connect to WiFi by entering the password
  • Some subtitles in Polish do not fit in the mobile app
  • During testing, I had to manually update the device to the software version provided by the manufacturer (in the future, the process should work automatically)
  • Competitor has more elaborate initial setup process and mobile app
  • Browser web interface is not translated into Polish

How do we evaluate the design? – Ranking 4+

D-Link M15 it has the shape of a cube with rounded edges and measures 92 x 92 x 92 mm. The entire case is matte, making it easy to clean and preventing visible scratches on the case. On the front, we find the D-Link logo and the LED indicator informing of the status of the device. On the back of the case are two Gigabit Ethernet sockets, a socket for the power socket, a reset button hidden in a small hole and a WPS button. At the bottom of each device there is a sticker on which we can read the factory passwords of WiFi access and administrator account and the QR code to be scanned during configuration in the mobile application Eagle Pro AI.

D-Link M15 thanks to its small size and neutral design, it can be positioned in many places and fits into the interior decoration of most rooms. However, it is not possible to easily hang it on the wall, which is quite common in this type of device. There is also no USB connector, which is very rare in mesh systems. On the other hand, the inexpensive Mercusys Halo H50G and the more high-end TP-Link Deco X50 offer 3 Ethernet connectors, which can definitely be a significant advantage for some people. D-Link.

What do we think of the configuration and the software? -note 4-

D-Link on its brochure offers two configuration modes M15 – using the mobile app Eagle Pro AI and by means of a computer connected directly to M15. Not all manufacturers allow a second path. Configuration via PC does not require a user account.

However, when it comes to the ease of setup and the quality of the mobile app, it’s D-Link he could learn a lot from competitors. When configuring in the mobile application, which guides you step by step, it was not possible to connect to the newly created network with the connection button displayed on the screen. A progress wheel would appear and the app would return to the login screen not knowing what the problem was. Only a manual connection to the network from the WiFi settings of the phone allowed to move on. On multiple app screens Eagle Pro AI Polish translations do not match and are obscured by adjacent interface elements. There was no finishing touch that would make a correspondingly good impression.

I also had a problem with WiFi transfers initially and had to manually update each device. I assume that over time this update will download automatically and find its way to users’ devices more easily.

mobile app Eagle Pro AI the main screen displays the number of connected clients and signal amplifiers. You can configure a WiFi network, also with a separate password for guests, and check the speed of the Internet connection. It is also possible to set priorities for specific devices and parental protection. In the case of parental controls, it’s easy to set a schedule to turn off the Internet at certain times for specific devices, and turn it off on demand, but website blocking requires you to enter the addresses of blocked websites. In the case of competing products, there were ready-to-use profiles for a certain age group, which immediately blocked websites of certain categories.

Further configuration requires the use of a browser and a web interface that is readable but not translated into Polish. Here we find, next to parental control and QoS, also firewall settings, port forwarding, dynamic DNS or Quick VPN. Here is also access to statistics on demand.

Transfers and WiFi coverage 6 -note 5-

As in testing other network devices, I measured in three scenarios – in the same room, across a diagonal room, through two walls, and at the farthest point in the apartment where the signal is the weaker. As a reference, I used the UPC Giga Connect Box offered by UPC with 1 Gbps Internet. I took two measurements for each scenario. The results can be seen in the screenshot Speedtest by Ookla. The currently tested speed was used to measure the speed POCO F4 GTthat supports the latest connectivity standards.

In the strongest WiFi 6 signal scenario, this resulted in a better result than that offered by UPC Giga Connect Box in WiFi ac standard – instead of maximum 430 Mbps D-Link M15 687 Mbps was reached. This is a significant improvement in network speed and can be felt when downloading larger files. However, it doesn’t come close to the best WiFi 6 performance I could get when testing other devices, which exceeded 800 Mbps.

In the second scenario D-Link M15 reaches 140 Mbps – UPC over 300 Mbps. This example shows that the alignment of base stations is crucial and that 2 devices will not always perform better than 1 at each location. I got similar results on competing devices, although the distance to the main base device is exactly the same as to the UPC router.

Mesh systems show the real advantage where the transfer problem is always the greatest. In the third scenario D-Link M15 got almost 200 Mbps, while UPC Giga Connect Box did not exceed 7.5 Mbps. Thanks to the signal booster, the speed in the farthest room through 4 walls has increased almost 27 times, providing comfort where previously it was impossible to use the Internet normally.

Our final assessment

D-Link M15 It is mainly one of the cheapest sets in the market that supports WiFi 6 standard. The cost of buying two devices in the set is around 559 PLN. If we wanted to go for a version with three devices, the price would be 839 PLN. For comparison, the recently tested TP-Link Deco X50 costs 1100 PLN for two devices, and although the ease of configuration is greater and the maximum transfers are higher, the price difference is essentially double. In turn, a very profitable set of 3 Mercusys Halo H50G devices for only 389 PLN does not offer WiFi 6, and this technology, in addition to high transfers, also provides other improvements, such as a consumption of reduced power in devices supporting WiFi 6, OFDMA reducing delays for small data packets, newer security and more. Because D-Link M15 is a good proposition between the cheaper WiFi ac devices and the much more expensive premium WiFi 6 solutions. You just have to be aware that the transfers and the ease of installation D-Link M15 it will not match offers twice as expensive.

We love: Significantly improved transfers in problem areas

We don’t like: Underdeveloped software and first run
