Intel Introduces Alder Lake-HX Processors – PC Performance in a Laptop

Thought new Intel processors were hurting performance? So check that out! The manufacturer has prepared even better Alder Lake-HX models that will be used in top gaming laptops and mobile workstations.

  • Intel is introducing the 12th Gen Core processors in the Alder Lake HX line – these are high-end models that will be used in gaming laptops and mobile workstations.
  • The manufacturer offers 7 new models – the best ones are equipped with 16 cores and 24 threads, DDR5 memory support and support for PCI-Express 5.0. An additional advantage is the possibility of overclocking.
  • Intel HX systems are ideal for professional applications. The manufacturer boasts that the new processors are much more efficient than their predecessors, as well as the proposals from AMD and Apple.
  • The new processors will appear in laptops for gamers and mobile workstations from all major manufacturers. However, we do not expect too many such constructions this year.

Mobile 12th Gen Intel Core processors debuted earlier this year and immediately took the crown of performance king (such systems are found in the best laptops for gamers). However, it seems that such a victory was not enough for the manufacturer, because at the Intel Vision 2022 conference it presented even more powerful models.

The first of the 12th Gen Intel Core Alder Lake-HX processors

The 12th Gen Core models in the Alder Lake-HX lineup are based on a hybrid architecture combining two types of cores – efficient P-Core and energy-efficient E-Core. The difference is that the chips use the same silicon core used in desktop processors (eg Core i9-12900K).

What does this mean in practice? The new models offer up to 16 cores and 24 threads (8 cores / 16 P-Core threads and 8 cores / 8 E-Core threads), and support DDR5 memory (up to 4800 MHz / LPDDR5 5200 MHz) and DDR4 (up to 3200 MHz / LPDDR4 4267 MHz). An added benefit is support for PCI-Express 5.0 and PCI-Express 4.0 (PCH) buses and Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E (Gig+) connectivity.

The manufacturer has prepared seven new models that will be used in gaming laptops and mobile workstations:

Units differ in number of cores and timing. It should also be noted that they support RAM overclocking (processor cores can only be overclocked on certain models). The manufacturer has also prepared special commercial models with ECC memory support and vPro extensions.

However, it is worth paying attention to the higher power consumption – the default power limit is 55 W, but it can go up to 157 W (!). New systems will therefore require significant cooling (mostly used in the larger 15 and 17 inch models).

The manufacturer boasts that the new processors offer much better performance compared to previous series and competing models from AMD and Apple.

The Core i9-12900HX in single-threaded applications should be 17% more efficient, and in multi-threaded applications up to 64% compared to the Core i9-11980HK (the top model of the previous generation). The advantage is similar to AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX or Apple M1 Max.

A significant increase in efficiency will also be seen in professional applications for designers in Autodesk AutoCAD it’s a 12% benefit, but in Autodesk Revit and Inwentor it’s 28% and 21% respectively.

Intel assures that the new processors will also prove themselves as the basis for a gaming laptop, although in this case the comparison with other models has already been abandoned.

All the major manufacturers are due to show off their laptops, but don’t expect a flood of these designs – according to the manufacturer’s announcement, more than 10 different designs of gaming and workstation laptops will appear on the market this year (including ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE, HP Omen 17, Gigabyte Aorus 15X and 17X, MSI GE67 Raider, GE77 Raider and GT77 Titan and Lenovo Legion 7i.
