Google I/O 2022 is right behind us – during the presentations broadcast live from Mountain View in California, you could see all the new things we can expect this year.
However, before Google presents the upcoming news, the company decided to brag about the possibilities of Project Magenta, which allows you to create music yourself. During the mini-concert of the guest Mija, anyone could try making their own piece on their own using machine learning via the Tone Transfer website.
This year’s conference decided to focus on the problem of the enormity of information that every user encounters on a daily basis. One of Google’s missions is to research methods for the most efficient sorting of data and its subsequent transmission. Google wants to turn available information into easily accessible knowledge that can be successfully shared with others.
Translator, YouTube and Docs
Google has announced the addition of no less than 24 new languages to its Translator service. This kind of achievement was possible thanks to machine learning, which used the knowledge of many other languages, which made the translation of the following ones even easier.
Pitchai also introduced an option in Maps, which is to allow individual cities to be explored in a new way. The company wants users to be able to check even small things like the number of tables in a restaurant, which means that you can visit all the buildings marked on Google Maps. The novelty will appear later this year for selected cities. In Europe, the feature will be available at the end of the year.
The changes will also affect YouTube users who will be able to translate subtitles into 16 different languages. This should make it easier to view content that interests them in a language they are potentially unable to learn. All they have to do is use the subtitle translation option in their native language.
Importantly, an automatic synopsis will also appear in Google Docs. The user will have the ability to create a quick summary of their work with just a few clickswhich will summarize the most important points and allow the person reading the text to acquire basic knowledge about it, without going into details.
Google Lens searches for information
Much of the presentation was devoted to the issue of machine learning and the challenges associated with creating models that can understand how people think and say. Using suitable Google templates, it was possible to create Multisearch, which allows you to find products of interest to the user based on the photo sent by him.
Now the company wants to go further – Multisearch must operate in the immediate area. When searching for an item, the user is supposed to get search results indicating the possibility of buying it near him. So if, for example, if he wants to eat a particular dish of Chinese cuisine, ML will analyze his photo and show him a list of nearby restaurants that serve them.
Moreover, by going to the store and using Google Lens, the user can quickly get information about the reviews of a given product. All you have to do is point the camera lens at the product in the store and the app will bring it back to the average rating given by userswhich should help him choose the perfect product.
equality and justice
Working with Dr. Ellis Monk, Google has successfully introduced a new skin tone scale that better captures the full spectrum of existing skin tones. This is another step in the company’s commitment to image fairness and improved representation of all products. By taking advantage of the new possibilities, users can expect better filters and face detection in their photos.
Google Assistant to the rescue
Google users will find it easier to communicate with a virtual assistant. One of the possibilities will be Look and Talk (eng. watch and talk), allowing you to issue commands while watching devices with the Google Assistant. The solution, which uses an integrated camera, records the gaze directed in its direction and automatically listens to any questions to which it then offers answers.
The company has also focused on natural speech recognition, creating models that naturally recognize gaps in speech and any sounds that suggest you’re thinking about what to do next. By recognizing that the user is unable to complete a statement due to hesitation, the assistant can provide options that the questioner may have asked about.
LaMDA 2 is coming
Google has bragged about the possibilities of LaMDA 2, allowing it to create even more amazing stories. The user specifies the conditions to be met, and the virtual assistant, based on these, creates new stories that can be a source of inspiration for users using the possibilities of LaMDA.
The new LaMDA 2 can also be useful for creating tasks and breaking them down into smaller steps that need to be completed to achieve the goal. For example, if you want to start a vegetable garden, the wizard will create a list of potential tasks, such as checking the condition of the soil, buying seeds, and other necessary activities.
Security with Google
The issue of security was also raised at the I/O conference. Google has spoken of the need to train new cybersecurity specialists, due to the growing threat from new hackers. The company said it protects up to 5 billion devices from potential network-related issues.
To further increase user safety, Google plans to prevent users from accessing potentially dangerous websites. After clicking on the dangerous link, the relevant information will appear and the browser will not allow you to access the dangerous website. Two-factor authentication will become the basis for using your Google account for added security.
What else, Google uses virtual card numbers, a feature long used by Apple. Instead of the real number of our debit or credit card, the application will create a virtual number, securing online transactions.
After ensuring that user data would not be resold, Google announced the ability to personalize ads. Now the user can enter the options himself and indicate that he is more interested in a certain advertisement than in others, and therefore – will receive more such content in the future.
The company has also focused on the ability to remove private data from the network. With just a few clicks, the user can submit a request to remove search results that contain their private data, such as address or phone number. The novelty will appear in a few months.
What’s new on Android
The conference could not miss the announcement of Android 13. Multilingual people will be able to use the option to set a separate language for many applications. What else, the option to add a driver’s license will appear in the new Google Wallet, thus, the phone will be able to completely replace the user’s physical wallet.
As Android grows, there will be more advanced options in Emergency SOS that can save lives, or an earthquake alert system.
The new Android should also revolutionize the use of tablets. The system will make the device easier to use, and Google plans to optimize another 20 apps to work even better on larger mobile screens. The most important thing, however, is to optimize the devices so that they work flawlessly through trouble-free contact with each other and data exchange.
Users will be able to continue watching the movie from the phone on the TV or send route data to the car system. All this must be made possible by the Fast Pair function, which combines devices from different brands that decide to cooperate with Google. Most important – The Android 13 beta became available after the conference.
New Pixels and Accessories
Users can expect the new Pixel 6a to launch for $449. The new model will use the same processor as the famous and popular Pixel 6 Pro. The smartphone will receive the functions of Real Tone, Live Translate, Magic Eraser, allowing to get perfect photos. You can see that Google is aiming to create gear that will also work in place of the camera. Sales of the model will begin on July 21, 2022.
This is not the end – Google has announced that the new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will appear in the fall. The next-gen Tensor processor will be inside, and the hardware will get the latest Android 13. More information, however, won’t appear in the coming months. The impatient, however, can console themselves with a vision new Pixel Buds Pro earphones, which should provide up to 11 hours of continuous listening, and their premiere is announced on the same day as Pixel 7.
Google Pixel Watch and … tablet
The expected Google Pixel Watch turned out to be a big novelty, the first watch dedicated to Pixel smartphones. The device received the Wear OS system, as well as fitness functions and other equipment known from similar devices available on the market. Google has bragged that the watch will be introduced this fall, along with the premiere of the new Pixels.
However, the company is also working on its own Pixel series tablet.. The device, which will be presented in more detail next year, should work closely with Pixels (both with smartphones and watches), and thus facilitate the exchange of data and the sharing of important files between different devices.
