Earlier this year, Intel introduced the Alder Lake family of 12th-generation mobile processors. In total, we got three different subcategories, differing in number of cores and overall power limits. The most powerful are the Alder Lake-H systems with a base TDP of 45W which can be increased to a maximum of 115W. We also have Alder Lake-P systems, officially the successors of Tiger Lake-U, also offering up to 6 performances. cores and 8 efficient cores. The most power-efficient units are Alder Lake-U, offering a TDP ranging from 9-15W. Today at the visiON 2022 conference, Intel is showcasing the best Alder Lake-HX chips for gaming laptops and the most powerful mobile workstations. These are de facto Alder Lake-S chips, moved to the BGA chassis and optimized for use in laptops.

Intel Alder Lake-HX processors have been talked about for a long time. The manufacturer finally confirmed its specs and build at the visiON 2022 conference. The Alder Lake-HX processors themselves look identical to the Alder Lake-S desktop. The size of the BGA case in this case is 45 x 37.5 x 2 mm, while the desktop board has dimensions of 45 x 37.5 x 4.4 mm – the main difference is the absence of a characteristic cap on top of the processor. Instead, the core comes into direct contact with the laptop’s cooling system. In terms of specifications, some things will change. The processors support up to 128 GB DDR4 3200 MHz or 128 GB DDR5 4800 MHz (up to four SO-DIMM slots) and are the first laptops to be PCIe 5.0 compatible. Alder Lake-HX processors offer up to 48 PCIe lanes, which is a significant difference from the previous Alder Lake-H, where we had 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes. In the case of Alder Lake-HX, we have 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes, 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes and 12 PCIe 3.0 lanes respectively. A laptop with the Alder Lake-HX processor can simultaneously support a dedicated graphics chip connected by 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes and four PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD carriers with a total capacity of 16TB.

As we are dealing with de facto desktop processors in a BGA package, the specification of the Performance and Efficient cores has changed a bit. Most systems debuting today have 16 cores and 24 threads – interestingly, this applies to Core i9 systems as well as Core i7 processors. Up to four units offer 8 Performance (Golden Cove) and Efficient (Gracemont) cores. Some chipsets support Intel vPro functionality. Unlike previous Alder Lake processors in laptops, the Alder Lake-HX units also offer DDR5 memory overclocking with XMP 3.0. There is also an Intel Dynamic Memory Boost feature. This is an option for less advanced people, consisting of intelligent switching of RAM settings between the official JEDEC specification and XMP 3.0 profiles. This feature will work with DDR4 and DDR5 modules, but certified modules will be required here. All Intel Alder Lake-HX processors will have the additional OC option, but only in the case of Core i9-12900HX and Core i7-12800HX systems, this applies to both Performance and Efficient cores.

In some situations, the best Intel Core i9-12900HX processor will deliver up to 17% better single-threaded performance than the Core i9-12900HK (Alder Lake-H) and up to 64% better multi-threaded performance. Such a big difference is not only due to the higher number of cores and threads, but also to a noticeable increase in power limits. The base factor PL1 (Processor Base Power – PBP) here is 55W, but PL2 (Maximum Turbo Power – MTB) is 157W. However, we have confirmation from our own sources that some upcoming laptops will increase further plus these limits – even up to 175 W for PL2. However, if someone is looking for uncompromising CPU performance regardless of power consumption, the new Intel Alder Lake-HX chips will deliver the best results by far.
