Self-driving cars free time

Artificial intelligence in vehicles will be the next step in the evolution of the automotive market. By design, it will be safer, more comfortable and will give us even more freedom of movement.

  • According to forecasts, autonomous vehicles will be on the market as early as 2030.
  • A European study shows that 10% of drivers time behind the wheel they spend on secondary tasks, and 4%. they use their mobile phone to write messages or make calls.
  • Even one in four accidents is caused by the use of mobile phones by drivers.

Mobile phones while driving are also used by professional drivers, much more often when the engine is idling or the vehicle is moving slowly. In addition, truckers are often distracted while driving.

Estimates by the Motor Transport Institute (ITS), based on police data, show that even one in four accidents in Poland can be caused by the driver using a mobile phone.

– Mobile devices, mainly telephones, are the most dangerous distractors, committing significant resources of drivers’ attention – says prof. Marcin Ślęzak, director of the Motor Transport Institute. Research shows that even talking on a hands-free kit worsens the brain’s ability to see obstacles and see. There may be other factors to this. A moving conversation with another passenger, loud music or a meal, which not only diverts attention from what is happening on the road, but also forces you to take your hands off the wheel. All this increases the risk of a traffic accident – adds prof. Marcin Slezak.

Dangerous Smartphones

What is the risk ? ITS data, consistent with United Nations calculations, indicate that up to 90 percent. road accidents are caused by the error of the driver who did not notice the danger in time or started to brake too late. Taking your eyes off the road for just 2 seconds doubles the likelihood of an accident, and using a smartphone can multiply that risk by 10.

– Road safety analyses, even if they improve every year, do not encourage us to be optimistic. Statistically, every 23 minutes there is a road accident in Poland. In addition to the main reasons, i.e. the inadequacy of the speed to the traffic conditions, non-compliance with the right of way, non-compliance with a safety distance between vehicles or incorrect overtaking, there there is also the distraction mentioned above – underlines prof. Slęzak.

Autonomous vehicles mean fewer accidents

According to Eurostat, Poles travel 17 kilometers as part of their daily mobility. Most of the time, 46.5%. they need to get to work, 16.5 percent. for meetings and for activities related, for example, to education – 9.4%. weather. In the case of Vistula drivers, 48.2%. of them use a car for their daily trips and 10% are their passengers. While the latter are not focused on driving, the driver should be focused. But drivers will soon be helped by modern technology.

– Autonomous vehicles, that is, vehicles that can move without driver intervention, will make roads safer – says Ślęzak. – Another advantage of self-propelled mobility will be that the driver of the vehicle will also be able to perform other activities, such as working safely on a computer or studying. Autonomous vehicles will therefore free up the time that many of us are currently wasting unproductively, as the average Pole spends up to 100 hours a year in traffic jams – concludes the director of ITS.

Artificial intelligence in vehicles will be the next step in the evolution of the automotive market. It is supposed to be safer (American calculations indicate that thanks to intelligent vehicles the number of accidents on American roads will decrease by 33%), more comfortable and will give us even greater freedom of movement. Already, each new generation of cars offers a multitude of systems that gradually bring us closer. According to forecasts, autonomous vehicles will be on the market as early as 2030.
